Emergency
Lighting
Emergency Lighting is more often a requirement
in Commercial and Industrial situations. Several
categories of emergency lighting are available
and a brief description of each is given below.
All types of fitting are usually required to provide a minimum of 3 hours
duration of emergency lighting when in service.
|
-
Non-Maintained
- This type of emergency lighting luminaire
is used where the area covered is normally
well illuminated and would provide escape
lighting during failure of the mains supply.
- The fittings have an integral battery and
charger unit and are permanently fed via a
key switch to enable regular testing of the
unit for correct operation and duration of
emergency supply.
-
Maintained
- A maintained luminaire incorporates all
of the features of a non-maintained fitting
with the addition of a facility for use as
a normal light fitting.
- Ideally suited to situations such as staircases
in blocks of flats where only one light fitting
need be used to carry out both general and
emergency lighting.
-
Sustained
- Sustained fittings generally have two different
set of lamps incorporated into the fitting.
One set of lamps is used as the normal lighting
and the other is reserved for use in an emergency.
This gives the assurance that the emergency
lamps will function when needed as they have
not been in service for a possible great length
of time as in the maintained luminaire.
- This type of fitting is a requirement in
buildings such as Cinemas and Theatres where
they are usually used to illuminate Fire Exit
signs.
Goodsons Electrical can design and install systems to your requirements in accordance with
BS 5266.
